The white line behind a plane is not always harmless

Google and the UK Government are launching a 30 month experiment that could change how aircraft cross the Atlantic.

The target is not fuel use or engine design. It is the bright white trail that sometimes forms behind an aircraft.

Those trails, known as contrails, can trap heat in the atmosphere. Google says warming contrails account for roughly one third of aviation's total climate impact. The surprising idea behind Operation Blue Skies is that many of them may be avoided with small, carefully timed route changes.

AI will predict where the dangerous clouds form

Contrails appear when hot jet exhaust meets cold, humid air at cruising altitude. Only some persist long enough to create a meaningful warming effect.

Google is using AI forecasts to identify those sensitive regions before an aircraft reaches them. Flight crews and air traffic controllers can then make a targeted adjustment while staying within normal operations.

The new trial moves this approach beyond isolated airline tests. It will coordinate contrail avoidance across the eastern half of the North Atlantic's Shanwick airspace, a corridor responsible for an estimated 5% of global contrail warming.

About 10,000 flights will pass through the test zone

Operation Blue Skies will run for 30 months and include two operational trials lasting about four months each.

Around 10,000 flights from hundreds of cities are expected to pass through the airspace during trial hours each year. Only a small percentage of flights that would otherwise cross contrail sensitive areas will be redirected.

The project brings together Google UK, NATS, the Met Office, Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge and specialist climate researchers. Machine learning and satellite imagery will be used to track the results, while independent teams evaluate the climate impact.

Google is contributing £1.4 million in research expertise, engineering time and computing infrastructure on a pro bono basis.

The climate payoff could be unusually fast

Most aviation climate strategies depend on new fuels, new engines or entirely new aircraft. Those transitions can take years.

Contrail avoidance works differently. It changes where a flight travels through the sky, not the aircraft itself. If the trial proves safe and effective at corridor scale, airlines could gain a practical way to reduce warming with existing fleets.

That does not make the solution free. Rerouting can add distance and fuel use, so the system must select only the flights where a small adjustment prevents a strongly warming contrail. The value of AI is in finding those precise moments.

The technology is moving beyond chat interfaces and into physical systems where a forecast can change a real world decision in minutes. The same pattern can improve power grids, shipping routes, weather response and industrial operations.
