ChatGPT Finances is rolling out to Free and Go users in the United States, expanding a feature previously available to Plus and Pro subscribers. Before connecting a bank, brokerage or credit report, decide what outcome you need, what data you are comfortable sharing and how you will verify any answer that could affect your money.
OpenAI announced the wider rollout on October 2, 2026. Eligible users can connect financial accounts through Plaid and credit data through Experian. The connections are separate, so using one does not require the other. Availability is currently limited to U.S. users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans across web, iOS and Android.
This article explains documented controls and a cautious setup process. It is not financial, investment, legal or tax advice.
What ChatGPT Finances can access and what it cannot do
With permission, ChatGPT can use connected balances, transactions, investments and liabilities to answer questions about spending, bills, subscriptions, savings, net worth and portfolio allocation. A separate Experian connection can provide credit-report information and a VantageScore 3.0 score.
OpenAI says the feature cannot see full account numbers, move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, alter retirement contributions, open or close accounts or file taxes. Read-only access reduces one class of risk, but the underlying data is still highly sensitive. Someone who gains access to your ChatGPT account may be able to see financial context, conversations or memories available there.
Choose the smallest useful data path
You do not have to connect everything. Use the least access that can answer the question.
| Your goal | Lowest-data starting point | When a connection may help |
|---|
| Build a general budget | manually enter rounded categories | when you need transaction-level categorization |
| Find recurring subscriptions | upload or paste a redacted list | when you want ongoing detection across supported accounts |
| Review spending changes | provide monthly totals | when you need current comparisons across multiple accounts |
| Understand credit factors | use general educational questions | when you intentionally authorize the separate Experian connection |
| Review investments | provide allocation percentages | when you need account-grounded holdings and recent changes |
If a rounded total or redacted export is enough, begin there. Connect an account only when live or transaction-level context creates a clear benefit.
ChatGPT Finances privacy checklist
1. Define one question first
Write the decision or pattern you want to understand. A narrow purpose makes it easier to decide which account is relevant and whether a connection is necessary.
Examples:
- Which categories changed most over the last 3 months?
- Which charges appear to recur monthly?
- What assumptions would change this savings plan?
Avoid starting with a broad request such as “analyze everything.” It encourages unnecessary data use and produces a harder answer to verify.
2. Secure the ChatGPT account
Enable multi-factor authentication before linking financial data. Review active sessions and recent security activity if those controls are available to your account. Use a unique password and secure the email account that can reset your ChatGPT access.
Security controls reduce risk but do not eliminate it. Consider whether anyone else uses the device, browser profile or ChatGPT account.
3. Inspect the connection and data scope
Plaid connects supported financial accounts. Experian provides a separate credit-data connection. Choose only the accounts relevant to your question and review the authorization screen before continuing.
Enter identity-verification details and verification codes in the provider's form, not in a ChatGPT conversation. OpenAI specifically gives this instruction for the Experian flow.
4. Review Data Controls and memory
OpenAI says conversations using connected financial accounts follow the model-training settings selected for your ChatGPT account. Review Settings, then Data Controls, before connecting.
Financial memories are separate saved details such as goals, obligations or context. Review what is stored and remove anything you do not want available for future finance conversations. Temporary chats do not access connected financial accounts, according to OpenAI.
5. Verify the data before trusting the analysis
Check the last sync time and connection status. Spending summaries can be wrong when transfers, credit-card payments, reimbursements or duplicate pending transactions are counted as spending. Ask which transactions were included, then compare the answer with the source account.
For any important conclusion, require:
- the time period used
- the accounts included
- excluded or missing data
- category assumptions
- transactions driving the result
- uncertainty and alternative explanations
Do not treat an AI-generated category, forecast or recommendation as authoritative merely because it uses connected data.
Use the feature to organize information, identify questions and compare scenarios. Verify balances, tax facts, credit-report items, investment information and payment dates with the institution or relevant professional before acting.
ChatGPT is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer or law firm. It does not replace professional advice and cannot act on your accounts.
7. Disconnect and clean up deliberately
You can remove a connection from Settings, Apps, Finances or from the Finances page. OpenAI says synced account data is deleted from its systems within 30 days after disconnection, and data associated with that ChatGPT connection is deleted from Plaid within 30 days under Plaid's policies.
Disconnection does not remove financial details from existing conversations. Delete relevant chats separately. Review and delete financial memories separately. If you have used Plaid with other services, removing the ChatGPT connection does not affect those other authorizations. Plaid Portal can be used to review them.
A safer first session
Start with one checking or credit-card account only if that account is necessary for your defined question. Confirm the sync date, ask for a plain list of included accounts and request a spending summary for a short period.
Then test the summary:
- Pick 10 transactions from the source account.
- Check whether each appears once.
- Inspect how transfers, refunds and card payments were classified.
- Correct obvious errors.
- Ask for the analysis again with the corrected rules.
- Save no sensitive memory unless it has a clear ongoing use.
This small test does not prove every future answer will be accurate. It shows whether the current connection and categorization are usable for the narrow task.
Example: subscription review without connecting every account
Imagine a person who wants to find recurring digital subscriptions. They connect only the card normally used for those purchases, not their brokerage, mortgage or credit report. They ask for charges that recur at roughly monthly or annual intervals, then verify each candidate against the card statement.
The output is treated as a review list, not an instruction to cancel. The person confirms cancellation terms directly with each provider and disconnects the account when the review is complete. This example is illustrative and does not promise savings.
When not to connect
Do not connect an account if you cannot secure the ChatGPT account, do not understand the authorization, share the login with another person or can answer the question with less sensitive information.
Stop if the provider screen, requested access or account identity is not what you expected. Use official support channels rather than entering credentials into a conversation or following unverified instructions.
The practical takeaway
The Free and Go rollout makes connected financial analysis available to many more people. Wider access does not change the right sequence: define the question, minimize the data, secure the account, inspect permissions, verify the source records and clean up after the task.
The value is not in connecting the maximum number of accounts. It is in getting a useful answer with the minimum necessary exposure and enough evidence to check it.
