Nearly Half of Specialized AI Work Crosses a Boundary

The researchers call this pattern task crossover.

They separated generic activities, such as writing and summarizing, from work strongly associated with a specific occupation. Then they compared each request with the user's own role.

Among those occupation specific requests, 43.5% came from people doing work linked to another profession.

The crossover was especially high for several groups:

  • 77% for customer experience workers
  • 75% for designers
  • 69% for human resources workers
  • 56% for legal workers
  • 53% for marketers

These numbers do not mean that everyone changed careers overnight. They show something quieter and potentially more important: people are absorbing pieces of other jobs into their own.

The Handoff Is Disappearing

Think about how work used to move through a company.

A salesperson needed a data cut from an analyst. A marketer needed a developer to fix a landing page. A manager needed finance to model a scenario. Each task created a handoff, a queue, and a delay.

AI lets the person closest to the problem attempt the first version immediately.

The OpenAI analysis found that engineering and marketing tasks travel especially far across organizations. Financial calculation and technology troubleshooting appeared among the most common outside tasks for every other occupation group in the study.

This does not eliminate specialists. It changes when they enter the process.

Instead of producing every first draft, specialists may spend more time reviewing difficult cases, setting standards, and improving systems that other people can use.

Small Teams Have the Most to Gain

Task crossover appears particularly valuable when specialist resources are scarce.

In a large company, a worker can send a request to legal, finance, design, or engineering. In a small business, the person who discovers the problem often has to solve it.

AI gives small teams access to a wider range of capabilities without adding a new employee for every function. A founder can research a market, draft a campaign, inspect a spreadsheet, and build a basic prototype in the same afternoon.

That speed can be a serious advantage.

It can also create false confidence.

Capability Is Not the Same as Expertise

Crossing a job boundary does not automatically make someone qualified to make every decision on the other side.

An AI assisted contract review is not a substitute for legal advice. A generated financial model can still contain a dangerous assumption. A quick technical fix can create a security problem that only appears later.

The safest pattern is simple:

  1. Use AI to explore and create a strong first version.
  2. Verify important facts and calculations.
  3. Bring in a specialist when the cost of being wrong is high.
  4. Keep a record of the assumptions and decisions.

AI expands your range. Judgment decides how far you should go.

What This Means for You

Your advantage will not come from doing one task slightly faster.

It will come from connecting tasks that used to require several people.

Pick one neighboring skill that repeatedly slows your work. If you are in marketing, learn to inspect data and make simple website changes. If you are in sales, learn to analyze customer patterns. If you are a designer, learn to test ideas with working prototypes.

Then build a repeatable AI workflow around that skill.

The strongest professionals in the next phase of work may not have the longest list of tools. They will be the people who can move across disciplines, recognize when expert review matters, and turn a messy problem into a finished outcome.

Your title may stay the same.

The boundaries around it probably will not.
